AI Notepad is here: a private, offline AI notepad that formats itself
A ground-up rebuild on the cross-platform AI Suite v2 stack: a simple notepad that formats itself as you write, with on-device AI writing help, ask-your-document Q&A with citations, annotations and a readable dark editor — your notes encrypted on your own machine.
Today we're releasing AI Notepad v2 — a ground-up rebuild on the cross-platform AI Suite v2 stack. It keeps the idea of a simple, friendly notepad and adds the thing that defines it now: a document that formats itself. Start typing plain text, add a heading or a table, and the file quietly upgrades to the format that can hold it — you never stop to pick a file type. The AI that helps you write runs on your own machine.
What it is
AI Notepad is a private, offline notepad with on-device AI. Notes, history and annotations stay on your computer and are encrypted at rest; the AI features run locally by default, so once your first model is downloaded, the app keeps working with the network off. It's the same on-premises, privacy-first principle behind everything Software Tailor builds [1].
The headline features
- A document that formats itself. Begin in plain text; add a heading, a list, a table or a picture and the file upgrades plain text → Markdown → Rich Text → Word automatically, the moment you add formatting the current type can't hold. It's never lossy, and the status bar shows the current type and why. Pin a format yourself any time.
- A real rich editor. Headings, lists, fonts, colours and highlights, full tables (merged cells, shading, pictures in cells, nested tables) and inline pictures, in a custom WYSIWYG editor — plus read and print modes with page setup, and export to PDF or a self-contained web page.
- Write with AI, on your machine. AI writing help can rewrite, continue, fix grammar or summarize, and shows the result as a coloured accept/reject diff so you see exactly what changes before anything is applied. The AI Writing Assistant takes you from a guided interview to an outline to drafted prose, grounded in what you've already written.
- Ask your document — with citations. Ask a question and get an answer drawn from your note, with citation chips that link to the exact paragraph; click one and AI Notepad jumps you there.
- Ask across all open documents. Turn on one switch and AI Notepad indexes every open tab, combines them into one searchable index, and answers across your whole workspace — each citation knows which document it came from, so clicking it switches to the right tab and jumps to the source.
- Find across all open documents. Find & replace can search every open tab at once and step through matches across notes, switching tabs as it goes.
- Annotations. Highlights and comments anchor to your text and follow your words as you edit, saved encrypted. Reading, editing and deleting annotations is free.
- Offline spell-check and auto-complete. A bundled dictionary spell-checks with no model from first launch, inline auto-complete suggests as you type (press Tab to accept), and an opt-in proofread reviews as you write.
- A readable dark editor. A new Editor appearance setting — Follow theme / Light / Dark — sets the editor's page colour independently, so uncoloured text stays readable whatever the app theme, without changing the colours stored in your document.
- One-time import from AI Notepad v1. The first time you launch, your old notes are imported once, locally and non-destructively — they open as tabs and your originals are never changed or deleted.
Free vs Pro
The whole product is Free on a small, fast on-device model — no time limit, no nag screens. Pro is about more on-device capability, not the cloud: it unlocks larger, more capable on-device models for the AI features, the other on-device embedding models for Q&A, and the one-click annotation/highlight toolbar. Even on Pro, the AI still runs on your machine — you never lose a capability by staying free, and you never trade privacy to upgrade.
Why on-device matters
The notes people most want AI help with — drafts, meeting notes, personal writing, client documents — are often exactly the text that can't go to a cloud service. AI Notepad brings the AI to your notes instead: nothing leaves the device with the on-device engine, your notes and annotations are encrypted at rest, and there's no subscription required to use the core app. For power users, an ainotepad command-line tool converts documents and runs as an MCP server, so AI clients and agents can drive it on your own infrastructure.
Get it
AI Notepad v2 is available now on the Microsoft Store for Windows as a free download, with Pro available when you want the larger on-device models and the annotation toolbar [2]. macOS, Linux and a browser edition round out the desktop line-up, with mobile on the roadmap.
