AI Reasoning v2 is here: a private AI that thinks it through, on your device

A ground-up rebuild of our reasoning chat app: ask the hard ones — maths, logic, code — and a local reasoning model works the problem through on your device, showing its chain-of-thought in a collapsible Thinking panel you can open or ignore.

Today we're releasing AI Reasoning v2 — a ground-up rebuild of our reasoning chat app on the cross-platform AI Suite v2 stack, replacing the older Windows-only DeepSeek listing. It's built around one kind of model: a reasoning model that thinks a problem through step by step before it answers.

What it does

Ask a question and a local reasoning model works through it on your own device — laying out steps, checking intermediate results, considering alternatives — and only then writes its answer. That extra working makes it noticeably stronger on the hard stuff: multi-step maths, logic puzzles and deductions, code (finding bugs, explaining failures, planning an approach), and any multi-step task that needs a plan or ordered steps. Your messages aren't uploaded with a local model, and once the model is downloaded it works offline, with your conversations saved encrypted on disk.

It shares the same slim chat shell as its sibling, Local AI Assistant, with the model picker constrained to reasoning models instead of general chat models.

New in v2

  • Built for models that think. The picker shows reasoning-only models that work a problem through internally before answering, instead of guessing in one pass. The free default is DeepSeek R1 Distill 1.5B, auto-selected and warmed up on first launch.
  • A collapsible Thinking section. The model's chain-of-thought appears above the final answer in a panel you can expand to follow and check its working — handy for spotting where a maths step went wrong — or leave collapsed to just read the conclusion.
  • Room to think. Because step-by-step answers run long, AI Reasoning automatically gives reasoning replies a larger default length budget, so a long chain-of-thought doesn't get cut off mid-thought. You can raise it further if you ever need to.
  • Streams as it reasons. Both the thinking and the answer appear as the model produces them, so you can watch it work and stop early once it's on the right track.
  • A clean, focused chat. Multiple saved conversations in a flat list, find within a chat or search across all of them, and context controls for reply length and creativity per chat or as a default.
  • Your choice of models. Free covers every feature on the on-device DeepSeek R1 model. Pro unlocks larger, more capable local reasoning models and optional cloud providers for the hardest problems.

Every feature is free

No feature is locked behind Pro. The Thinking section, the larger reply budget, saved chats, find and search, encrypted history, the context controls, and backup and restore all work on every tier, running on a capable on-device reasoning model with no time limit or nag screens. Pro is simply about choice of model — larger local reasoning models and optional cloud providers when a problem needs more horsepower. The tier gates the model, never a feature.

Why on-device matters

A reasoning model that shows its working is most useful exactly where the answer has to be checked — a financial calculation, a logic-heavy contract question, a piece of code you're about to ship. Those are also the things people are most reluctant to send to a cloud service. AI Reasoning brings the model to the problem instead: nothing leaves the device with a local model, the chain-of-thought is yours to inspect, your history is encrypted at rest, and there are no per-message usage fees. That makes it a fit for students and STEM work, developers debugging and planning, analysts running multi-step deductions, and anyone in a privacy-conscious, offline or air-gapped setup. It's the same on-premises, privacy-first principle behind everything Software Tailor builds [1].

It's a deliberately focused app: reasoning chat, history and context, and nothing else to wade through. No tools, no web, no documents, no folders — those live in the full AI Chatbot. For everyday non-reasoning chat, Local AI Assistant is the better fit.

Get it

AI Reasoning v2 is available now on the Microsoft Store for Windows as a free download, with Pro available when you want larger and cloud reasoning models [2]. A headless CLI ships alongside it; editions for macOS, Linux, browser and mobile are on the roadmap. Read the full feature tour on the product page.
